West Asheville Underpass

This piece is a tribute to one of my favorite naturally occurring artworks: the West Asheville underpass. I pass beneath it daily—sometimes involuntarily in traffic—to take in its quiet majesty. Rust blooms across its surface like lichen on stone, and the industrial forms bear the fingerprints of time, weather, and countless human interactions.
I’m drawn to the way decay becomes design here. The stains, scrapes, and cracks—they’re a composition. This painting captures the layered textures and muted palette of the underpass, translating its accidental beauty into intentional form. It’s a meditation on presence, on finding art in the overlooked, and on the sacredness of the everyday.
